How Does a Child Come into Kinship Care?
In instances of mistreatment or disregard, DFPS has the authority to intervene by extracting children from their residences in order to guarantee immediate security. The courts are obligated to explore provisional arrangements with relatives, thereby compelling parents to furnish DFPS with contact details of potential caregivers within their familial circle. Throughout the placement procedure, the court places utmost importance on the welfare of the children. A conference known as Family Group Decision Making (FGDM) is frequently convened, wherein all relevant parties propose a specific family member or close acquaintance as the most suitable guardian for the child. Subsequently, a court-ordered placement may transpire, typically after DFPS conducts a thorough evaluation of the home to ascertain its safety and appropriateness for the child. Whenever feasible, CPS takes into account the preferences of the parents. If placement with a kin caregiver is not attainable or appropriate, the child may then be temporarily accommodated in foster care.
